The 2020 Mt. Mitchell Craft Fair originally scheduled for August 7 & 8 has been canceled. With much regret the Yancey County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has unanimously voted to cancel the 2020 Craft Fair. While the board recognizes many in our community rely on the fair financially, with the recent extension of Phase 2 into late July by Governor Cooper, the limit on the number of participants for outdoor events made it virtually impossible to hold the craft fair. “The overwhelming uncertainty surrounding the implementation of Phase 3 makes it very hard to even offer some scaled down version of the fair,” reports Lucy Doll, Board President. The Board, along with county and town administrators, had several meetings in an attempt to find a way to hold some variation of the annual fair that has been a staple in the community for so long. “Unfortunately the extension of Phase 2 has taken that possibility off the table,” Doll added.
The Board is working to support the Chamber members and the community at large and will be continuing to explore ways to keep our community alive during these tough times. An extension of the Chamber, the Travel and Tourism Committee, recently implemented a $20,000 advertising campaign in order to draw tourists to our area as businesses open back up. The campaign is focused on two areas primarily, outdoor activities and the arts. The Board encourages everyone to shop local and support our community.
