Town of Burnsville Project Selected For Funding

On April 22, 2021 the Town of Burnsville received notice from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality that its application to the Community Development Block Grant-Infrastructure (CDBG-I) Program was selected for funding by the State Water Infrastructure Authority (SWIA) on April 14, 2021. The SWIA has approved funding through an initial planning grant and a second larger construction grant.

The initial grant is for $125,400.00 to fund activities needed to get the project to construction. The second construction grant is for $1,874,600.00 to fund activities from plans and specifications through construction. The total amount is for $2,000,000.00. There are no local matching funds required for this award.

The proposed project is to replace old and deteriorated main interceptor sewer lines along West Main Street, Highway 19E, and Pine Swamp Road that collect wastewater from the entire Town. The project consists of replacing existing 10” VCP line with 12,999 linear feet of 10” HDPE sewer line. The project will also include 120 sanitary sewer taps, 20 point repair sewer service taps, and rehabilitation of 58 manholes.

“The Town is very pleased to receive this funding for a project that will benefit the entire town as we move forward in our efforts to repair and modernize our wastewater treatment system. The Mayor and Council’s commitment to addressing the pressing need for water and sewer infrastructure improvements is a priority,” said Heather Hockaday, Town Administrator.

“The Town Board and I are grateful for these funds, and to our Town Administrator Heather Hockaday for her hard work in securing them. Quality of life issues for our town will always focus on water and sewer and how well we manage these two major issues that are so vital to our town’s growth which brings economic development and a safe environment for our Burnsville families,” said Mayor Theresa Coletta.

The contract for the award is expected within the next 45 days.
